The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel is a tree squirrel in the order Rodentia found in northern Europe and Siberia, preferring Scots pine, Norway spruce and Siberian pine.

It has predominantly black fur, but it can have a red color.


The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. The head and body length is from 19 to 23 cm (7.5 to 9 in), the tail from 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in), and the adult weight varies between 250 to 340 g (8.8 to 12.0 oz).

Red squirrels have a life expectancy of 3 years. Individuals may reach 7 years of age, and 10 in captivity.
