Bialystok, Poland

Poland, Bialystok

Bialystok is a city in Poland. With an estimated 2014 population of 295,459, it is the largest city in the north-east of the country.

The first traces of settlement in the area of modern Bialystok date back to the 14th century.

Bialystok was first mentioned in written sources in around 1426. In 1692, it was granted city rights by King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania John III Sobieski (1629–1696). The Branicki Palace, built between 1691 and 1697, is one of the oldest surviving building in the city.

Within a radius of a few dozen kilometres from the city are many historic and natural conservation areas of European importance. Among them, primarily, is the Bialowieski National Park, the bastion of the European bison and included in the World Heritage List recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.
