Riga, Latvia
by Valdas Travel Video - 21

Latvia Capital Riga

Riga is the capital of Latvia, located on the shore of Baltic sea, on the creek of Daugava river. With an estimated 2017 population of 641,000, it is the largest city in the country.

The first traces of settlement in the area of modern Riga date back to the 2nd century. The city was first mentioned in written sources in around 1198. In 1201, it was granted city rights by the bishop Albert of Riga (1199–1229). The Cathedral of Saint Mary or Riga Cathedral, dates to 1211, is one of the oldest surviving building in the city.

UNESCO has declared Riga's historical center a World Heritage site in recognition of its Art Nouveau architecture, widely considered the greatest collection in Europe, and for its 19th-century buildings in wood.

  1. I love the look of Riga looking in from the water. Different colors and pointed rooftops Scattered about. It's hard to imagine a city from 1198 still exists today so many centuries later. The cathedral dates back to the twelfth century or would that be eleventh? Even the art collection I can't even imagine it. What a place to visit!
