Madrid is the capital of Spain, located just northeast of the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula. With an estimated 2017 population of 3,200,000, it is the largest city in the country.

The first traces of settlement in the area of modern Madrid date back to the 9th century, even though the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age.




Madrid was first mentioned in written sources in around 865. In 1202, it was granted city rights. The Church of San Nicolás, dates to 1202, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city.

Madrid is best known for its great cultural and artistic heritage, a good example of which is the El Prado Museum. The city also boasts some of the liveliest nightlife in the world. More than 6 million tourists visit Madrid every year.
